November 15th 2012 is an important diary date for anyone who lives in Cleveland. This is the date when you, the public of Cleveland, will decide who will be your Police & Crime Commissioner. The replacement of Police Authorities with elected Police and Crime Commissioner’s is the most important change in British policing for decades and no matter what anyone’s view is on this change, there is no denying one simple fact: it empowers the public to dispense with the services of anyone who does not deliver – and rightly so. This has never been the case with Police Authorities.
Vote Alam Vote Independent For Policing Not Politics
Cleveland Police is, once again, going through a difficult period. The shadow of yet another external investigation - 'Operation Sacrisity' - hangs over it. In recent memory Cleveland Police has been subjected to more than its fair share of controversy, scrutiny and difficulties which have, at times, detracted from its primary functions, lowered the morale of all its decent hardworking personnel and lowered the confidence that the general public of Cleveland have in their Police Service. The public simply deserve better. The dedicated personnel of Cleveland Police deserve better. It will only get better when there is strong, decisive and politically independent leadership.
The post of Police & Crime Commissioner is an extremely important role with key responsibilities to provide stronger and more transparent accountability of the police and hold Chief Constables to account; effectively making the police answerable to the community they serve. This covers crucial aspects of how Cleveland Police should be run and includes overall responsibility for the appointment and dismissal of the Chief Constable. The PCC will also work in partnership with a range of agencies at local and national level to ensure there is a unified approach to preventing and reducing crime.
I am committed to the public of Cleveland having previously served you as a Police Officer across the Cleveland area. As your Independent Candidate for this post I believe that, with your support and your vote, I can bring strong, decisive and politically independent leadership to Cleveland Police. I will work closely with the Chief Constable and other agencies to:
- Deliver real improvements to our police service
- Reduce crime and the fear of crime
- Protect the rights of victims
I will always have only one objective - to improve the quality of life for all who live, visit or work in Cleveland – our "Cleveland Community".
