On November 15th 2012, throughout England and Wales, Police Authorities will be replaced by publicly elected Police and Crime Commissioner’s, (PCCs). These PCCs will be elected by the public and they will:
- Hold the Chief Constable and the force to account; effectively making the police answerable to the communities they serve.
- Regularly engage with the public to obtain and represent their views.
- Aim to cut crime and deliver an effective and efficient police service within their force area.
- Set the Force budget and the Council Tax Precept
- Appoint and, if necessary, dismiss the Chief Constable. (There is a set procedure to follow)
- Publish an annual report
- Work in partnership across a range of agencies at local and national level to ensure there is a unified approach to:
- Preventing and reducing crime and re-offending
- The welfare of victims and witnesses
- Youth offending
- Drug and alcohol related crime.
